Paper and Cardboard

In 2023, 89% of the paper and/or cardboard packaging in the Netherlands was recycled or reused, which was well above the legal target of 85%.

Paper and cardboard recycling

Paper and cardboard are readily recyclable. Furthermore, the act of separating paper and cardboard is firmly embedded in our society. This enables us to achieve high recycling percentages.
In the Netherlands, packaging made of paper, cardboard and graphic paper is usually collected with non-packagings. In order to be aware of the packaging amounts collected (and recycled), an annual survey is carried out to determine the composition of the collected paper and cardboard. In 2022, 64% of the paper and cardboard waste was made up of packaging.

The proportion of packaging is increasing every year thanks in part to online purchases but also reduced consumption of graphic paper.
