Metal
In 2023, 99% of ferrometal packaging in the Netherlands was recycled or reused, which was above the legal target of 94%. For aluminium packaging, 97% was circular, which was well above the legal target of 73%.
Metal recycling
Metal packaging from households is sometimes collected alongside PMD waste but is generally collected via the residual waste. Following incineration of the residual waste by energy from waste plants, the metals are recovered from the bottom ash using magnets.
Via this technique, only small quantities of metal leave the cycle, and it is particularly consumer-friendly too. Thanks to innovative techniques, the Netherlands now leads the way when it comes to recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. We can be very proud of this!
